How it came about

  1. The need

The parliamentary election had to be observed from one place, accurately and openly, so that anything unusual could be answered quickly. The cameras were spread across many locations and separate networks.

  2. What we did

About 700 cameras from polling stations across the provinces and the capital were brought into one Nx Witness system and shown in real time in the monitoring centre. Layouts per constituency, an automatic showreel, access by mandate and server failover were all configured.

  3. Result

On election day the monitoring centre could follow every polling station from one screen. The capital, the commission, the political parties and each province and constituency see only the cameras that concern them. If a server fails, its cameras move to the standby server and monitoring continues in about a minute.

How the system works

  1. Showreel

Twenty cameras are shown live on one screen and the next group follows automatically every 30 seconds — 23 groups in all.

  2. Access by mandate

The capital, the commission, the political parties and each province and constituency see only the cameras that concern them.

  3. Failover

If a server fails, its cameras move to the standby server and the client reconnects. After a network or power fault this takes about a minute.

  4. Server load

The load each server carries is watched live while the system runs.
