AI video analytics: on the camera or on a server?
The three places video analytics can run, on the camera, on an edge device, or on a server, and when each one fits, with VCA and Vaidio as examples.
AI video analytics detects events in camera video, raises alerts, and makes recordings searchable. The first question to settle is where the analytics run.
Three options
- On the camera. Analytics run inside an AI camera. VCA's IPAi cameras, for example, run analytics, face recognition, and plate recognition on the camera itself.
- On an edge device. A compact device adds AI to cameras you already have.
- On a server. A central server processes video from many cameras. Vaidio is a Vision AI platform that adds AI analytics to existing IP cameras and VMS, on-premises, at the edge, in the cloud, or hybrid.
Which one fits
It depends on the number of cameras, the equipment already in place, network capacity, and the analytics you need. Many projects combine more than one option.
